Emergent Readers.....At Last!

Hello Friends! I have finally tackled making emergent readers to go along with my little units. I'm not a spatial thinker AT ALL, like I have trouble with back and front copies. {Granted with the copy machine at school it is difficult depending on if you papers are printed landscape or portrait.} I had wanted to make them to go with my little units, but I was afraid I would royally mess them up. I finally gave it a try since we have been out the past 4 days for rain, flooding and snow. I am pretty sure I got it and it really wasn't so hard in the first place.

SNOW Much Fun!

Here is a little recap of last week:
Since we haven't had snow here yet, only rain, we had a snowball {marshmallow} fight outside. This was SO much fun for students and teachers. All I have to say is don't use the big marshmallows. We used both sizes and after being chased around with marshmallows pelting me, the big ones kinda hurt.
We also made hot chocolate. Not your average Swiss Miss, but homemade!
Pinned Image
Click on the picture to take you to the pin. It tasted awesome, but was a little rich.
Above is our -at snowmen my RTI kiddos made. They did wonderful with this, but you may have noticed one of them is upside down. He told me that it was NOT a snowman, but a pot shooting out snowballs. Don't you just love the imagination at this age!?

All ready to start the mitten!
This chart will be up for the week. Today we labeled the animals with the kiddos helping me on beginning and ending sounds. Students then made their own mitten with the animals in order and labeled them. That went in their writing folder for future reference.
Yes, that IS a bucket of candy under my easel! :)
Here is a link to my mitten unit that I will be using this week:
I just love the clipart from KPM Doodles!

As always, when I post about a new unit, the 1st TWO followers to comment with their email will get it for free. :)

Ready To Start Back...and a FREEBIE

I cannot believe that the break is over and it's time to head back to school! Shew, it really flies by fast. But I am so excited about the unit my kinders will be doing when we start. We are working on snow/cold thematic units for January and will of course have a celebration with hot chocolate and pajamas {any excuse for a pajama day....right?!}.

The first book we are going to do is "The Cold Lady Who Swallowed Snow" by Lucille Collandro. I LOVE these books. I already have a "cold lady" made for each of my kiddos to use to retell the story.

And of course, we are going to have stations about the "cold lady" with sequencing, beginning sounds/blends, write the room and writing.

Click here to check out my new unit in my little store. :)

And here is a little freebie just for my followers!!

AND...I will send my new unit to the first 2 followers who comment with their email!

No Voice, SPIDER!, Some Kindness, and a New Mini Unit with a FREEBIE!

First of all, HAPPY FRIDAY!

Oh my, this was one of those mornings where you feel like you should just turn around and go back to bed. I woke up with no voice, thanks to wonderful allergies. And I had spilled 2 drinks before I even got to school. This was not going to be a good day.

Then, when my students were doing independent reading/AR and conferencing with me...I saw it. I saw a big fat brown spider lurking beside one of my student tables.

This isn't the famous spider from my classroom. Sorry guys I was a little too panicky when I saw it to stop and take a picture. Thank the Lord my students were otherwise occupied and it wasn't direct instruction time. The kiddos that were watching me must have been wondering what I was doing. I looked around, still frozen, for something to kill it with, found my watering can and smushed it. By then everyone's eyes were on me (apparently all it takes it hitting a watering can on the floor). And when I asked for a tissue, they brought me every box in the room! Whew, I don't want that to happen EVER again.

On a good note, during stations today, their writing station was to write a letter to someone in the room telling them something they were good at or something they liked about that person. We talked about putting lots of effort and love into the letter. Students drew numbers to see who they would get. I had mine in there too, which meant I also wrote a letter. I was really surprised at the response I got. Students put their letters in our "mailbox" and I delivered them at snack time. The looks on their little faces reminded me of why I teach. They were so excited and immediately went to the one who wrote their letter to thank them. It was PRECIOUS!! Definately something I will do again. :)
Here's how students were able to randomly select a friend so everyone could get picked:

Below are some examples of the sweet letters:

And BTW, I have a new mini unit. I'm using it to go with Earth Day, because what kid doesn't like worms? It's for the book "Diary of a Worm" by Doreen Cronin. Click on the book cover to go by my TPT store to check it out!

Hope you all had an awesome week. So thankful that today is FRIDAY. Only 20something more days to go!!

Alexander and the Horrible, Terrible, No Good, Very Bad Day = Awesomeness

This past week we did a unit on the Alexander book. The little ones LOVED it! We did everything from cause and effect to writing a letter to Alexander and telling him how to have a better day. We even ventured out and did an Australian animal study. The unit turned out really cute, and the little ones did such a great job! :)
